The Soviet national ice hockey team, or USSR national ice hockey team was the national hockey team of the Soviet Union. The Soviets were one of the most dominant teams of all time in international play. The team won nearly every world championships and Olympic tournament between 1954 and 1991 held by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Due to the questionable nature of the amateur status of the Soviet players, their participation in the Olympics was questioned. Great team technically, highly skilled. Not as gritty as Canada but more skilled and played a more strategic game. Can’t believe, I can’t see how they lost to the USA in 1980. Has to be one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

I guess you must have missed the hook on Bourque to give the Russian their 4th goal. It really doesn’t matter, the best team won in 1987. It takes a great team to come back from 3 goals down. Canada turns it on when they need to…haven’t you noticed how many late goals they score to win games. They have another level that other countries can’t match. Like the Russian coach said “too much Gretzky too much Lemieux.”

Soviet won olympic gold in 84 & 88, but not the world cup these years. Do you know why? BECAUSE THERE WERE NO WORLD CUP! They began to have both tournaments in the 90’s.
